Archival Overview
Revered 13th-century Sufi mystic and humanitarian saint of Tunis, disciple of Abu Said al-Baji and Shadhili master, celebrated for her radical asceticism, public preaching, and defense of the impoverished.
Biographical Record
Born Aisha al-Manoubiya in the village of Manouba, she refused forced aristocratic marriage, giving away her cattle and belongings to the poor to pursue religious knowledge. Moving to Hafsid Tunis, she studied under Sufi masters Abu Said al-Baji and Abu al-Hasan al-Shadhili.
Shattering medieval gender norms, she preached publicly in mosques, debated male theologians in the Zitouna, and spent her wealth purchasing food for laborers and securing freedom for prisoners. Revering her memory across seven centuries, Tunisians affectionately remember her as the patron saint of female autonomy and divine compassion.
