Archival Overview

Legendary Andalusian-Moroccan queen and governor of Tetouan who commanded western Mediterranean naval fleets in strategic alliance with Hayreddin Barbarossa to avenge the fall of Granada.

Biographical Record

Lalla Aisha bint Ali ibn Rashid was born into the Andalusian nobility of Granada, fleeing to Morocco following the 1492 Reconquista to co-found the mountain sanctuary of Chefchaouen. Marrying the governor of Tetouan, she assumed sole sovereign rule as Hakima (governor) upon his death in 1515.

Bearing the title 'Al-Hurra' (The Free Woman), she was a brilliant naval strategist who allied with Hayreddin Barbarossa, dividing Mediterranean command: Barbarossa controlled the east while Sayyida dominated the western waters, raiding Iberian ports. In 1541, Moroccan Sultan Ahmad al-Wattasi traveled from Fez to Tetouan to marry her, a unique royal homage to her supreme power.
