Archival Overview
Visionary lyrical landscape painter revered as the 'Dervish of Azerbaijani Art', whose ethereal, shimmering impressionist canvases captured the fairy-tale landscapes of Azerbaijan.
Biographical Record
Sattar Bahlulzade was born on December 15, 1909, in the village of Amirjan on the Absheron Peninsula. Studying under Marc Chagall's colleague Vladimir Favorsky at the Surikov Art Institute in Moscow, Bahlulzade chose not to pursue official socialist realism, turning instead to pure landscape painting.
Leading a simple, ascetic dervish-like existence, he traveled across Azerbaijan capturing the apricot blossoms of Nakhchivan, the oil derricks of the Caspian, and the dramatic crags of the Caucasus in luminous pastel pinks, lavenders, and emerald hues. Masterpieces such as Tears of Kapaz and Surakhani Fires earned him universal love and exhibitions across Paris, Prague, and Havana.
