Biographical Record

Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (1888–1975) served as vice-chancellor of Andhra and Banaras Hindu Universities and held the prestigious Spalding Chair of Eastern Religion and Ethics at Oxford University. In his monumental two-volume 'Indian Philosophy' (1923), he defended Hinduism and Vedanta as a universal, rational spiritual heritage.

He served as India's first ambassador to the Soviet Union (meeting with Stalin) and first Vice President before serving as President of India from 1962 to 1967. When his students asked to celebrate his birthday on September 5, he requested that it be dedicated to honoring all teachers, creating India's national Teachers' Day.
