Living for years in Rangoon (Burma) as a humble clerk, Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay (1876–1938) wrote with unprecedented psychological realism and sympathy for socially outcast women, widows, and victims of rigid caste patriarchy.
His 1917 novella 'Devdas' became an enduring cultural archetype of doomed romantic passion, adapted dozens of times into Indian cinema. In 1926, his political novel 'Pather Dabi' supported armed revolutionary struggle against British rule and was promptly banned by the colonial government.
