Sant Tukaram (1608–1650 CE) was a humble grocer who lost his wife and son during the catastrophic Deccan famine of 1630, turning entirely to contemplation on the hills of Bhandara.
He composed over 4,500 devotional Abhangas in vernacular Marathi; when orthodox Brahmins forced him to sink his manuscripts in the river Indrayani, tradition records they floated back unharmed after thirteen days of prayer.
