Biographical Record
Eknath was born into a Brahmin family in Paithan, Maharashtra, and was a disciple of Janardan Swami. Breaking through rigid caste orthodoxy, Eknath famously fed underprivileged outcasts with food prepared for ancestral rites and gave sacred Ganges water to a dying donkey on pilgrimage.
Eknath authored the Eknathi Bhagavata, a monumental commentary on the eleventh skandha of the Bhagavata Purana, and introduced folk devotional theatrical performances (Bharuds) that made spiritual philosophy accessible to the masses. In 1583, he produced the authoritative, critically restored text of Dnyaneshwar's Dnyaneshwari.
