"I gave up my family for the stage; the theater became my home, my family, and my life."

Archival Overview

Formidable classical actress of stage, film, and television, immortalized for her heartbreaking role as Nefisah in Naguib Mahfouz's The Beginning and the End (1960).

Biographical Record

Born Thoraya Youssef into an Upper Egyptian Coptic family, she was disowned by her relatives when she chose a theatrical career at the Institute of Dramatic Arts. Mentored by Zaki Tulaimat, she mastered classical Arabic stage declamation and fluent French.

Her shattering tragic portrayal of Nefisah in Salah Abu Seif's Bidaya wa Nihaya (1960) ranks among the greatest acting performances in Arab cinema. She later starred on Parisian stages with the Comédie-Française in Ionesco's plays.
