Biographical Record
Samuel Maharero (1856–1923) became Paramount Chief in Okahandja in 1890. Confronted by systematic German land expropriation, sexual abuse of Herero women, and debt traps orchestrated by German traders, Maharero forged an alliance with other chiefs. In January 1904, he ordered a general insurrection, instructing his fighters not to harm women, children, missionaries, or Boers.
In August 1904 at the Battle of Waterberg, General Lothar von Trotha's imperial forces surrounded the Herero and issued the infamous 'Vernichtungsbefehl' (Extermination Order). Maharero led thousands of his people on an epic, harrowing trek across the waterless Omaheke desert into British Bechuanaland, preserving the survival of the Herero nation.
