Samora Moisés Machel was a Mozambican military commander, revolutionary socialist leader, and statesman who served as the first President of Mozambique from independence in 1975 until his tragic death in a suspicious plane crash in 1986. Leading FRELIMO in the war against Portuguese colonial rule, he championed health care, universal literacy, and gave sanctuary to Zimbabwe and South Africa freedom fighters.
