Archival Overview
Incomparable Tunisian vocalist whose velvety, melancholy voice and deep mastery of Bedouin desert melodies and classical malouf made her the uncontested sovereign diva of Tunisian traditional music.
Biographical Record
Born Salouha Ben Brahim Ben Abdelhafidh in northwestern Tunisia, she was discovered by the artistic director of the Rachidia Institute, who was captivated by the rich timbre, expressive microtones, and emotional gravity of her singing voice.
Saliha became the premier soloist of the Rachidia Orchestra, recording timeless masterpieces such as Frak Ghzali, Yamma La Ylouni, and Khali Baddalni. Her untimely death at age 44 plunged the newly independent republic into national mourning.
