Daring avant-garde bilingual poet, linguist, and left-wing dissident who co-founded the influential journal Perspectives and challenged traditional linguistic orthodoxies in collections like Al-Lahma al-Hayya.
Biographical Record
Salah Garmadi was one of the most innovative and irreverent voices in 20th-century Tunisian literature. A trained linguist at the Sorbonne, he taught linguistics at the University of Tunis and was a co-founder of the radical leftist movement Perspectives in the 1960s.
In his groundbreaking poetry collection Al-Lahma al-Hayya (The Living Flesh), Garmadi fearlessly blended literary Arabic with Tunisian vernacular and French, breaking taboos and creating a vibrant, defiant voice that inspired generations of counter-cultural poets.
