Archival Overview
Noble young maiden of Abitinae who leapt from a window to escape a forced pagan marriage, arrested during the secret Sunday assembly, and martyred at Carthage in 304 AD.
Biographical Record
Saint Victoria was a noble Christian woman from the town of Abitinae in the fertile Mejerda valley. When her pagan parents arranged a marriage with a wealthy pagan nobleman, she leapt from an upper window on her wedding day and fled to the Christian community of Abitinae.
Arrested alongside priest Saturninus during secret Sunday worship, Proconsul Anullinus attempted to spare her life because of her youth and beauty, claiming her brother had come to pardon her. Victoria proudly interrupted the court: 'I am a Christian; no one has deceived me; I acted of my own free will,' accepting imprisonment and martyrdom in Carthage prison.
