Archival Overview
Fourteenth-year-old Christian Berber maiden whose martyrdom for casting down a bronze dragon idol in Tipasa inspired one of the largest early Christian pilgrimage basilicas in the Mediterranean.
Biographical Record
Saint Salsa was a 14-year-old Christian Berber girl who lived in the bustling port of Tipasa in Mauretania Caesariensis during the early 4th century. Distressed by the blood sacrifices offered to a gilded bronze serpent idol on the town's seaside promontory, she crept into the temple by night and cast the idol into the sea.
Discovered by the temple guardians, Salsa was stoned and cast into the sea, where her body was later miraculously recovered by local sailors and reverently entombed on the eastern hill overlooking Tipasa's azure bay.
