Archival Overview
Revered 4th-century North African Christian martyr from Bizerte/Carthage whose veneration spread across the western Mediterranean to Naples and Ischia.
Biographical Record
Restituta was born in the Roman province of Africa Proconsularis, either in Carthage or Hippo Diarrhytus (Bizerte). During the brutal persecutions of Emperor Diocletian in 304 CE, she publicly proclaimed her Christian faith before Roman proconsular magistrates.
Sentenced to death, she was placed in a pitch-soaked boat and set ablaze adrift on the Gulf of Tunis. Miraculously preserved in Christian hagiography, her boat drifted to the island of Ischia near Naples, where she remains revered as patron saint.
