Archival Overview
Bishop of Calama (modern Guelma) and Augustine's first biographer, who compiled the monumental library catalog of Augustine's surviving works.
Biographical Record
Possidius was an intimate disciple of Saint Augustine in the monastery of Hippo Regius before being ordained Bishop of Calama (present-day Guelma, Algeria) around 397 AD. In Calama, he oversaw a vibrant Christian community and courageously defended religious peace amidst intense civil conflict with Donatist factions.
When the Vandals invaded North Africa in 429 AD, Possidius fled to besieged Hippo and tended to Augustine on his deathbed in 430 AD. He subsequently authored the 'Vita Sancti Augustini' (Life of Saint Augustine) and preserved the 'Indiculus' (comprehensive catalog of Augustine's writings), a masterwork of ancient biography that saved North African intellectual heritage for humanity.
