Archival Overview
Beloved deacon of Carthage and spiritual disciple of Saint Cyprian who suffered months in dark Carthage dungeons before his joyful martyrdom in 259 AD.
Biographical Record
Saint Montanus was an educated deacon in the church of Carthage. Following the martyrdom of Bishop Cyprian in 258 AD, Roman authorities rounded up Cyprian's closest clerical associates under Emperor Valerian.
Imprisoned in a pitch-black cell where they were denied bread and water for weeks, Montanus authored prison letters preserved in the *Passio Montani et Lucii*, describing mystical visions and encouraging unity among believers. When led to the execution field outside Carthage, he prayed for peace among the churches before submitting his neck to the sword.
