Archival Overview
Egyptian military commander from Thebes who led the famed all-Christian Theban Legion, executed in Roman Gaul along with his soldiers for refusing to persecute fellow Christians and worship imperial idols.
Biographical Record
A native of Upper Egypt, Maurice rose to command the elite Theban Legion (composed of 6,600 Egyptian Christian soldiers recruited from Thebes). Dispatched by Roman Emperor Maximian to Gaul to suppress local rebellions, the legion was ordered to sacrifice to pagan deities and slaughter Christian civilians.
Maurice and his legionaries refused the order, declaring their primary loyalty was to God. Maximian ordered the legion decimated twice and finally massacred at Agaunum (Switzerland). Maurice became the patron saint of the Holy Roman Empire and of soldiers across Europe.
