Fifteenth-century mystic poet and weaver whose sharp couplets (Dohas) pierced through sectarian dogmatism, ritual bigotry, and caste cruelty, synthesizing Hindu and Muslim spirituality into pure love for the One.

Biographical Record

Living the humble trade of a weaver in sacred Kashi (Varanasi), Kabir rejected idol worship, priestly hypocrisy, and superficial asceticism, proclaiming that God dwells not in stone temples or mosques, but in the heart of every seeker.

His verses were collected in the Bijak and enshrined in the Sikh Guru Granth Sahib. Tradition recounts that upon his passing in Maghar, his Hindu and Muslim disciples quarreled over funeral rites, only to find sweet flowers beneath his shroud.
