Archival Overview

Pious Christian of Carthage martyred during the climax of the Diocletianic persecution, whose tomb in the Basilica of Dermech was a center of early North African pilgrimage.

Biographical Record

Saint Januarius was a faithful member of the church of Carthage who suffered martyrdom during the Great Persecution of Diocletian in 305 AD. Arrested for concealing the liturgical vessels of the church and refusing sacrifice, he accepted death with peace.

Archaeological excavations in Carthage near Dermech revealed late Roman mosaic inscriptions dedicated to Januarius and his fellow African martyrs, attesting to centuries of continuous veneration by the Christian populace of Byzantine and early medieval Ifriqiya.
