Archival Overview
Elected Bishop of Carthage in 480 AD after 24 years of vacant see under Vandal repression, renowned for charity to the poor and courageous defense of faith at the Council of Carthage (484 AD).
Biographical Record
Saint Eugenius was elected Bishop of Carthage in 480 AD with the reluctant consent of Vandal King Huneric, ending twenty-four years during which the Vandals had forbidden the consecration of an orthodox bishop in Carthage. His personal austerity and openhanded charity to the impoverished earned him the devotion of both Christians and Vandals.
At the dramatic Council of Carthage in 484 AD, Eugenius presented the famous Confession of Faith before the Arian bishops. In retaliation, Huneric exiled him to the desert sands of Tripolitania under the guardianship of a brutal Moorish chieftain, later banishing him to Gaul where he died near Albi.
