Archival Overview
Roman senatorial aristocrat of Carthage and magistrate who renounced imperial privilege to join the oppressed Christian community of Abitinae, martyred under Diocletian.
Biographical Record
Saint Dativus held the prestigious rank of Roman senator (Clarissimus) and owned substantial estates in Proconsular Africa. Despising pagan worldly ambition, he joined the congregation of presbyter Saturninus in Abitinae.
Brought before Proconsul Anullinus, the magistrate was astonished to see an illustrious senator among the prisoners. Torn with iron claws upon the rack (eculeus), Dativus prayed aloud for his torturers and steadfastly proclaimed his faith until he was thrown back into the dungeon to perish with his brethren.
