Archival Overview
Heroic early Christian martyr of Carthage celebrated by Saint Cyprian in De Lapsis for redeeming an initial moment of human fear by returning to face torture and fire with unconquerable courage.
Biographical Record
Saint Castus was an early Christian citizen of Carthage. During the terrifying Decian persecution (250 AD), when Roman magistrates employed torture to compel Christians to burn incense to the imperial gods, Castus and his companion Aemilius initially gave way to physical agony.
Overcome with grief at having surrendered, they returned voluntarily to the tribunal, openly professing their faith. Subjected to fire and rack, they endured the flames with serene courage, perishing as radiant martyrs praised by Saint Cyprian and celebrated in sermons by Saint Augustine as beacons of redemption.
