Archival Overview
Court clerk and stenographer at Tangier who refused to record the death sentence of Saint Marcellus, casting away his pen in protest and accepting martyrdom.
Biographical Record
Saint Cassian was an official legal secretary and clerk of the Roman provincial court of Mauretania Tingitana in Tangier. Present at the trial of Saint Marcellus the Centurion in October 298 AD, Cassian was tasked with drafting and notarizing the formal death decree.
Horrified by the injustice of condemning an honorable man solely for his spiritual conscience, Cassian hurled his wax tablets and stylus to the floor in open court, denouncing the verdict as tyrannical. Imprisoned immediately by Roman magistrate Agricolanus, he was executed shortly thereafter on December 3, 298 AD, standing as the patron martyr of stenographers and court clerks worldwide.
