Archival Overview
Early Christian martyr of Cherchell who surrendered himself to Roman authorities to spare his relatives from retaliatory imprisonment and torture.
Biographical Record
Saint Arcadius was a prominent citizen of Caesarea Mauretaniae (present-day Cherchell, Algeria). When Roman imperial decrees mandated public sacrifices to the pagan gods under penalty of death, Arcadius withdrew to the solitude of the surrounding hills to avoid participating in pagan rites without provoking bloodshed.
Learning that Roman magistrates had arrested his family members and held them hostage to force his emergence, Arcadius voluntarily presented himself before the governor. He offered his own life in exchange for their release, accepting gruesome torture and execution with serene fortitude, becoming one of Cherchell's most celebrated early martyrs.
