Archival Overview
Bishop of Thagaste (Souk Ahras) and Augustine's lifelong dearest friend, legal reformer, and co-architect of North African monasticism.
Biographical Record
Saint Alypius was born in Thagaste into one of the town's prominent municipal families and studied law with distinction in Carthage and Rome. Renowned for his uncompromising personal incorruptibility as a magistrate in Rome, he refused lucrative bribes and defended public justice with singular moral courage.
Alypius stood at Augustine's side in the garden of Milan in 386 AD during Augustine's conversion and was baptized with him by Saint Ambrose. Returning to Numidia, he helped establish the first monastic community at Thagaste and was consecrated its bishop in 394 AD, leading delegations to Rome and Ravenna to defend North African churches until his death around 430 AD.
