Educated in Paris, Mohamed Said Pasha was a Francophile prince who succeeded Abbas I in 1854. In 1858, he promulgated the landmark Sa'idiya agrarian law, establishing full private landownership rights for Egyptian peasants for the first time in modern history.

He granted his close friend Ferdinand de Lesseps the historic concession to dig the Suez Canal, laying the cornerstone of the waterway that connected global trade. The Mediterranean port city of Port Said was founded and named in his honor in 1859.
