Archival Overview
Venerated sage-prophet and author of the epic Ramayana (24,000 verses). Grieved by the slaying of a crane, he invented the classical Sanskrit poetic meter (Shloka) and provided sanctuary to Queen Sita.
Biographical Record
Transformed through intense penance into a supreme sage, Valmiki lived in an ashram on the banks of the Ganges at Bithoor. Inspired by the sage Narada, he composed the immortal saga of Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita.
When Sita was exiled, Valmiki gave her refuge in his hermitage, nurturing and educating her twin sons Lava and Kusha, who preserved and sang the sacred epic across ancient kingdoms.
