Archival Overview
Heroic young cavalry commander of Misrata and brother of Ramadan al-Suwayhli, whose decisive tactical charge routed the Italian army at the Battle of Qasr Abu Hadi on April 29, 1915.
Biographical Record
Trained in equestrian warfare and desert reconnaissance from youth, Sadun al-Suwayhli was the primary operational field commander of the Misratan resistance forces. On April 29, 1915, at Qasr Abu Hadi near Sirte, he commanded the central cavalry assault against an Italian colonial army under Colonel Miani.
His lightning charge captured the entire Italian artillery train, machine guns, and supply stores, inflicting the most crushing defeat on Italy since the Battle of Adwa and liberating central and western Libya from colonial occupation. He fell in battle in 1920 defending Misratan regional autonomy.
