Biographical Record

Sadek Bouyahia, known artistically as Sadek El Béjaoui, was the grand master who revitalized classical music in the historic port city of Bejaïa. In the 1930s, he traveled to Tlemcen and Algiers to study under Cheikh Larbi Bensari and Mahieddine Bachtarzi, unifying the different regional Andalusian traditions.

El Béjaoui founded the Municipal Music Conservatory of Bejaïa in 1946, where he discovered and mentored legendary young talents including El Hachemi Guerouabi and Djamel Allam. A prolific composer of classical Hawzi songs such as 'Ya Qalbi Isbar', his pedagogical devotion preserved Bejaïa's musical soul.
