Archival Overview
Syria's greatest modern playwright who formulated the 'Theatre of Politicization' and delivered UNESCO's historic 1996 World Theatre Day message.
Biographical Record
Sa'dallah Wannus was born in a coastal village near Tartus and studied journalism in Cairo before attending the Sorbonne's Institut d'Études Théâtrales in Paris. Shaken by the 1967 Arab defeat, he wrote Haflat Samar min Ajl Khamsa Huzayran (An Evening's Entertainment for June 5), an electrifying theatrical indictment of Arab political delusion that transformed modern Arab theater.
Wannus rejected passive theatrical entertainment in favor of 'theater of politicization' (masrah al-tasyis), confronting audiences with uncomfortable truths about tyranny, patriarchy, and historical surrender in masterworks like Tuqus al-Isharata wa-al-Tahawwulat (Rituals of Signs and Transformations). Facing terminal cancer, he delivered the 1996 UNESCO World Theatre Day message, concluding with his immortal words: 'We are sentenced to hope'.
