Biographical Record
Born in the heart of the Casbah of Algiers, Saadi Yacef joined the PPA youth wing before rising to head the FLN Autonomous Zone of Algiers (ZAA) during the height of the urban warfare campaign in 1956–1957. Managing secret networks of fighters, couriers, and bombmakers, he turned the labyrinthine Casbah into a fortress of anti-colonial resistance.
Captured by French paratroopers in September 1957 and sentenced to death, he was pardoned after De Gaulle took power. In independence, he founded Casbah Films and produced The Battle of Algiers (1966), which won the Golden Lion at Venice and became one of the greatest political films in world cinema history.
