Archival Overview
Master Moroccan painter, graduate of the San Fernando Royal Academy in Madrid and the École du Louvre in Paris, whose poetic, somber expressionist canvases made him a titan of Moroccan visual arts.
Biographical Record
Saâd Ben Cheffaj was one of Morocco's most intellectually accomplished visual artists. After completing rigorous classical art studies in Spain and art history at the École du Louvre, he returned in 1965 to teach history of art and painting at the National School of Fine Arts in Tetouan.
His work evolved through periods of figuration, abstraction, and haunting neo-expressionism, characterized by deep earthy ochres, blacks, and meditative human silhouettes that explored mortal solitude and spiritual transcendence.
