Ryuichi Sakamoto (1952–2023) revolutionized global music across classical, avant-garde, and popular domains. In 1978, he co-founded Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO) alongside Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi, whose pioneering synth-pop and electronic arrangements anticipated techno, synthwave, and hip-hop.
As a cinematic composer, Sakamoto achieved international renown scoring Nagisa Ōshima's Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (1983), in which he also co-starred opposite David Bowie. For Bernardo Bertolucci's The Last Emperor (1987), he won the Academy Award, Golden Globe, and Grammy Award for Best Original Score.
