Archival Overview
The sixth and final President of the Polish government-in-exile, who in 1990 formally handed over the pre-war presidential insignias to freely elected President Lech Wałęsa.
Biographical Record
Ryszard Kaczorowski was an instructor in the Polish scouting movement before being arrested by the Soviet NKVD in 1940 and sentenced to death, a sentence commuted to ten years in a Siberian Gulag. Released under the Sikorski-Mayski agreement, he joined Anders' Army and fought heroically at the Battle of Monte Cassino.
Settling in London after the war, Kaczorowski maintained the unbroken continuity of Polish democratic institutions. In 1989, he became the final President of the Republic of Poland in exile. In December 1990, he traveled to the Royal Castle in Warsaw to hand over the presidential insignia to Lech Wałęsa, completing five decades of exile government.
