Rutilio Grande 🌐

Rutilio Grande García was born in the small rural municipality of El Paisnal, El Salvador. Entering the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1945, he completed theological and social sciences studies in San Salvador, Spain, Venezuela, and Belgium. Returning to El Salvador, Grande taught pastoral theology at the San José de la Montaña Seminary, inspiring generations of young clerics to engage directly with rural poverty following the social teachings of the Second Vatican Council and the Medellín Bishops' Conference.

In 1972, Grande was appointed pastor of the parish of Aguilares, a region dominated by vast sugarcane plantations where peasant sharecroppers lived in abject misery and debt bondage. Working alongside a team of young Jesuits, Grande established Christian Base Communities, teaching peasants to read using the Gospel and encouraging them to form agricultural cooperatives and peasant unions to demand fair wages and land dignity.

His pastoral work infuriated local landowners and military authorities, who branded him a subversive communist agitator. In February 1977, Grande preached his famous 'Sermon of Apopa,' declaring that the Eucharist was a banquet for all humanity and that God did not want millions to starve while a handful hoarded the harvest. On 12 March 1977, while driving between Aguilares and El Paisnal to celebrate Mass, Grande's vehicle was ambushed by military police and death-squad gunmen. Grande was shot dead alongside an elderly peasant and a teenage boy. His death galvanized his close friend Óscar Romero to lead the national fight for human rights.
