Archival Overview
Beloved Norwegian working-class poet whose sharp, rhythmic verses in collections like På stengrunn and På gjensyn captured the urban poverty, defiance, and solidarity of Oslo workers.
Biographical Record
Rudolf William Nilsen was born on February 28, 1901, in Christiania (Oslo) into a working-class family in the eastern district of Grünerløkka. Educated in local schools, he became a radical socialist journalist and dedicated himself to giving voice to the urban proletariat.
His debut collection På stengrunn (On Stony Ground, 1925) achieved immediate acclaim for its combination of fiery class-conscious defiance and tender romantic lyrics dedicated to the tenement alleys of Christiania. His posthumous collection Hverdagen (1929) cemented his legacy as Norway's most gifted working-class poet before his life was cut short by tuberculosis at age twenty-eight in Paris.
