Biographical Record
Ruben Um Nyobe was born on April 10, 1913, in Song Mpeck, Sanaga-Maritime. Working as a court clerk, he mastered French jurisprudence and became leader of the Union des Syndicats Confédérés du Cameroun (USCC).
In April 1948, Um Nyobe co-founded the Union des Populations du Cameroun (UPC), serving as its charismatic Secretary-General. Travelling to the United Nations in New York in 1952, 1953, and 1954, he eloquently demanded immediate reunification of British and French Cameroons and total independence. When French authorities banned the UPC in 1955, he organized rural resistance from the Sanaga-Maritime forest. Betrayed and shot dead by French troops on September 13, 1958, his memory remains the beacon of Cameroonian dignity.
