"Natural selection is a mechanism for generating an exceedingly high degree of improbability. To call in the statistician after the experiment is done may be no more than asking him to perform a post-mortem examination."

Archival Overview

Titan of science acclaimed as the 'Father of Modern Statistics' and co-founder of Modern Evolutionary Synthesis, who invented analysis of variance (ANOVA), maximum likelihood estimation, randomized experimental design, and the concept of null hypothesis.

Biographical Record

Sir Ronald Fisher (1890–1962) studied mathematics and physics at Cambridge. At the Rothamsted Agricultural Experimental Station in Hertfordshire, Fisher solved the chaotic variability of field trials by inventing randomized block design, Latin squares, the analysis of variance (ANOVA), and the F-distribution that bears his name.

In his 1918 paper and 1930 magnum opus 'The Genetical Theory of Natural Selection', Fisher resolved the great conflict between Mendelian genetics and Darwinian natural selection, mathematically proving that continuous variation is generated by many Mendelian genes acting together. Richard Dawkins called him 'the greatest of Darwin's successors'.

Key Life Milestones

1925

Publication of 'Statistical Methods for Research Workers'

Introduced p-values, degrees of freedom, and randomization, defining 20th-century experimental science.

1930

Publication of 'The Genetical Theory of Natural Selection'

Unified Mendelian genetics with Darwinian selection, formulating Fisher's fundamental theorem of natural selection.
