Archival Overview
Towering pioneer of Norwegian modernist poetry who introduced industrial technology, highways, and environmental reverence into Nordic verse in collections like Jord og jern.
Biographical Record
Rolf Jacobsen was born on March 8, 1907, in Christiania (Oslo) and grew up in Fluberg and Hamar. His sensational debut collection Jord og jern (Earth and Iron, 1933) shocked traditional Nordic literary circles by praising airplanes, cranes, and asphalt in free verse, launching poetic modernism in Norway.
Over the subsequent six decades, Jacobsen's poetry deepened into profound meditations on the fragile balance between encroaching industrial machines and the sacred silence of primeval Nordic forests. His late collection Nattåpent (Night Open, 1985), written following the death of his beloved wife Petra, became one of Norway's most cherished bestsellers of mourning and enduring devotion.
