Biographical Record
Roh Tae-woo was born in Daegu and graduated from the Korea Military Academy in 1955 alongside his close friend Chun Doo-hwan. A senior commander during the December 12, 1979 military coup, he backed Chun's authoritarian regime. However, in June 1987, when millions of pro-democracy protesters took to the streets across South Korea, Roh made the courageous political decision to issue the June 29 Declaration, agreeing to restore direct presidential elections and free political prisoners.
Elected president in December 1987 after the opposition vote split between Kim Young-sam and Kim Dae-jung, Roh presided over South Korea's successful transition to democracy. He hosted the triumphant 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics and pursued "Nordpolitik", establishing historic diplomatic relations with the Soviet Union, China, and eastern bloc nations while signing the 1991 Basic Agreement with North Korea. In 1996, he was convicted of mutiny and corruption, served time in prison, expressed deep remorse, and was later pardoned.
