Biographical Record
Roberto Clemente Walker (1934–1972) was a Puerto Rican baseball icon whose peerless right-field throwing arm, .317 career batting average, and humanitarian devotion made him a hero across Latin America and the United States. Clemente was a 15-time All-Star, 12-time Gold Glove winner, and two-time World Series champion.
On September 30, 1972, he notched his 3,000th career hit. Just three months later, on New Year's Eve, Clemente died in an airplane crash off the coast of Puerto Rico while escorting emergency relief supplies to earthquake victims in Managua, Nicaragua.
