Archival Overview

Mythic Delta blues singer and guitarist whose 29 recordings shaped rock and roll and spawned the crossroads legend.

Biographical Record

Robert Leroy Johnson was an American Delta blues singer, songwriter, and guitarist whose landmark recordings in 1936 and 1937 established the foundational DNA of modern blues and rock and roll. According to southern folklore, Johnson acquired his uncanny guitar virtuosity by meeting the Devil at a rural Mississippi crossroads at midnight and trading his soul for musical genius.

Johnson's haunting vocal delivery, dazzling slide guitar work, and complex driving bass-line fingerpicking influenced Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Keith Richards, and Bob Dylan. Songs like 'Cross Road Blues', 'Sweet Home Chicago', 'Love in Vain', and 'Hellhound on My Trail' became foundational blues standards. He died mysteriously at age 27, becoming the charter member of the tragic '27 Club'.
