"Cinema is not an entertainment; it is a weapon to shake human beings awake to their historical tragedy."

Archival Overview

Radical Indian filmmaker and dramatist whose Partition Trilogy, culminating in Meghe Dhaka Tara, captured the epic trauma, displacement, and maternal sacrifice of the 1947 division of Bengal.

Biographical Record

Displaced from East Bengal by the 1947 Partition, Ritwik Ghatak (1925–1976) poured the searing wounds of refugee life and cultural mutilation into cinema. Unlike Ray's classical poise, Ghatak used melodramatic intensity, expressionist sound design, and Brechtian alienation to shatter audience complacency.

His masterpiece 'Meghe Dhaka Tara' ('The Cloud-Capped Star', 1960) portrayed the tragic sacrifice of Neeta, an impoverished refugee girl whose desperate final cry—'Brother, I want to live!'—echoes through the mountains as one of the most devastating climaxes in cinema history. As vice-principal of FTII Pune, he mentored Mani Kaul and Kumar Shahani.
