Archival Overview
Cherished Palestinian singer and composer from Nazareth who modernized traditional folk lullabies and inspired resistance through music.
Biographical Record
Rim Banna was born in Nazareth, the daughter of celebrated Palestinian poet Zuhaira Sabbagh. She studied vocal performance and conducting at the prestigious High Institute of Music (Gnessin Academy) in Moscow, developing an ethereal, poignant vocal style that blended classical Western technique with ancient Levantine microtonality.
Banna dedicated her life to collecting, preserving, and modernizing rare traditional Palestinian children's songs and forgotten rural lullabies in landmark albums such as The Mirrors of My Soul (2005) and April Blossoms. Even when vocal cord paralysis struck her during her courageous battle with cancer, she continued to compose music and advocate for human rights until her death at fifty-one.
