Archival Overview
Beloved Brabant Fauvist painter and sculptor whose vibrant, light-filled domestic canvases of his muse Nel and ecstatic bronze sculpture The Mad Virgin (Het zotte geweld) crowned early Belgian modernism before his tragic death at 33.
Biographical Record
Apprenticed to his woodcarver father in Mechelen, Wouters studied sculpture and painting at the Brussels academy, living in bohemian poverty in Watermael-Boitsfort with his beloved wife and eternal model, Nel Duerinckx.
Wouters captured sunlight filtering through domestic curtains with luminous, broken brushstrokes of radiant lemon yellow and cobalt blue. His 1912 bronze masterpiece Het zotte geweld (The Mad Virgin), inspired by dancer Isadora Duncan, captured pure Dionysian joy. Mobilized in 1914, he was interned in Holland where cancer claimed his life.
