Richard I of England (Richard the Lionheart / Cœur de Lion)

Third son of King Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine, Richard grew up in the troubadour culture of Poitiers. Acclaimed for fearsome battlefield bravery, he took the cross and financed the Third Crusade alongside King Philip II of France, conquering Cyprus and the fortress of Acre.

His tactical brilliance at the Battle of Arsuf (1191) defeated Saladin's forces, securing a treaty allowing unarmed Christian pilgrims access to Jerusalem. Captured by Duke Leopold of Austria on his return, he was ransomed, later perishing from a crossbow wound during a minor siege in Limousin.
