Biographical Record
Richard Phillips Feynman was one of the most brilliant, eccentric, and beloved theoretical physicists of the twentieth century. Renowned for his irreverent spirit, charismatic lecturing, and bongo-playing antics, Feynman revolutionized modern quantum field theory. During World War II, as a young prodigy in the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos, he oversaw computational groups calculating uranium critical mass and cracked colleagues' safes for recreation.
Following the war, Feynman developed the path integral formulation of quantum mechanics and introduced Feynman diagrams—intuitive pictorial representations of mathematical expressions governing subatomic particle interactions. This groundbreaking work on quantum electrodynamics (QED) earned him the 1965 Nobel Prize in Physics alongside Julian Schwinger and Sin-Itiro Tomonaga. In 1959, his visionary lecture There's Plenty of Room at the Bottom catalyzed the field of nanotechnology. In his final public service, he demonstrated the brittle failure of O-rings in ice water during the Presidential Commission investigating the 1986 Space Shuttle Challenger disaster.
