Archival Overview
Eleventh Prime Minister who led Canada through the depths of the Great Depression, created the Bank of Canada and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), and introduced Bennett's New Deal.
Biographical Record
Rising from poverty in New Brunswick, Bennett built a fortune as a corporate lawyer and businessman in Calgary. Winning the 1930 election during the collapse of the global economy, he attempted to combat unemployment through public relief camps and Imperial trade preferences.
In 1935, Bennett dramatically proposed a Canadian 'New Deal' with minimum wages, unemployment insurance, and work hours regulation. He established foundational national institutions: the Bank of Canada (1934) and the Canadian Radio Broadcasting Commission (forerunner of the CBC), personally giving millions to struggling citizens.
