Archival Overview
First Prime Minister of independent Lebanon who co-authored the 1943 National Pact, establishing Christian-Muslim power-sharing.
Biographical Record
Riad Al Solh was born in Sidon into a prominent Sunni political family and studied law at the University of Istanbul. A veteran nationalist repeatedly sentenced to death and exiled by Ottoman and French authorities, he was elected Prime Minister upon Lebanon's declaration of independence in 1943.
Together with Maronite President Bechara El Khoury, Solh authored the unwritten 1943 National Pact (Al-Mithaq al-Watani), which established Christian-Muslim coexistence by decreeing that Christians would renounce French protection and Muslims would renounce union with Syria. He governed with charismatic authority until his tragic assassination in Amman in 1951.
